The Faculty of Medicine at the Rostock University Medical Center is dedicated to the research focus HealthTech Medicine – connecting Medicine with Engineering sciences to better understand health and disease in order to develop innovative solutions for patient well-being. This focus is strongly based on interdisciplinary translational science including fundamental, experimental and clinical research with the clear aim to improve clinical therapeutic approaches. Research activities at the Department of Anesthesiology, Intensive Care Medicine and Pain Therapy are clearly aligned to that strategy, which lead to focussing and enforcement of translational research within the Department.

Based on the afore mentioned rationale, the scientific working group “Omic Way to Life (OWL)” is established within the Department of Anesthesiology, Intensive Care Medicine and Pain Therapy. The idea of OWL is primarily proposed by Dr. Sukul to the KAIS and is developed further via departmental decisions and reached its formal commissioning on the 17th of June 2025.

Dr. Sukul will act as the sole research leader of the OWLgroup. Here, he will direct and exercise fundamental and experimental research in system biology, multi-omics and thereafter, translate those to pre-clinical and translational clinical investigations via analytical science. Prof. Reuter (Head of Department) will serve as the clinical leader and advisor for this research group.

OWL will be an operationally independent research group and it will foster intra- and inter-departmental as well as external cooperation in order to scientifically and strategically contribute towards the current research vision, goal and perspective of the UMR within the domains of Health Tech Medicine.
